Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus honors the love of Christ symbolized by his Heart, drawing on Scripture, the pierced side of Christ, and centuries of Christian contemplation. Its modern form developed strongly in seventeenth-century France, especially through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial, with St. John Eudes and St. Claude de la Colombiere also associated with its spread. Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the universal Church in 1856.
